Synopsis

IN a collegetown terrorized by a series of rapes, Bret confronts Sandy in her friend’s Collegetown apartment — accusing her of having an affair with Mark, Bret's live-in lover. Sandy, Mark’s graduate assistant, denies this, as had Mark. Unconvinced, Bret leaves. After Sandy settles down to sleep, a disguised figure enters and pauses in the shadows to watch her while the lights fade to black.

A month after Sandy’s unexplained disappearance, Bret returns to the apartment, fearful that Mark is still involved with Sandy. Mark has followed Bret. A decisive, break-up argument ensues — and in the heat of the moment Bret rents the empty apartment from which Sandy had vanished.

A mutual attraction develops between Bret and her new neighbor Eric, a charismatic fellow artist who is secretive about the precise nature of his art. But Bret does not know that landlord Harold spies on his tenants from a see-through mirror — or that the mirror conceals a passageway which is also Harold’s secret entryway into the apartment.

Bret is shocked when unorthodox Police Detective Craig tells her he believes Mark is the serial rapist and that he murdered Sandy. But Bret fears someone else has been watching her and has sent her an unwanted token of his affection. Bret’s free-spirited friend Gillian moves in with her, to allay her fears.

Gillian reveals privately to Mark that she knows he was having an affair with Sandy, that Sandy was probably using Mark to further her career, and that Mark is now a murder suspect. Mark reacts violently, swearing he had nothing to do with Sandy’s disappearance. Left alone, Gill learns that Craig is on leave and acting unofficially, on his own. But before Gillian can inform Bret of these discoveries, Gillian is strangled by a figure emerging from the shadows.

With Gillian missing and the evidence mounting against Mark, Bret turns to Eric for comfort.

But all of Bret’s prior assumptions are terrifyingly negated when ---
