A
sassy and witty mutiny of career mens wives
A
one-act play by Larry Kinnear
Peter has been anxiously interviewing for a job as Regional Sales Manager for an art supplies company. He has decided to concentrate on "making it" in the commercial world. His wife Suziana has been working hard all week at her new job, and is looking forward to a quiet evening at home. The prospect of either of them "making it" in the corporate world does not grab her. Peter comes home, and reminds Suziana that he had been pressured into inviting his prospective boss, Mr. Johnson, along with Johnsons submissive wife, and their nephew, Matthew, for dinner that evening. Suziana urges him to cancel, as she is not in the mood for company, and would rather be sitting outside, drinking a glass of wine, and reading a book ... in the nude. Peter cannot cancel. The guests arrive, and things do not go well. Suziana becomes more and more agitated with Mr. Johnsons arrogance. Mrs. Johnson becomes less and less inhibited and submissive, as the she feels the effects of the zombies she has been drinking. Suziana winds up chucking it all, disrobing in stages, and finally exiting to go read her book, in the backyard, (out of sight, in the nude). The immediate result is comic chaos -- but after he has tossed his insensitive nephew out, Mr. Johnson becomes more human -- amending his treatment of his wife. And Peter not only gets the job -- he gets back in touch with his artistic nature. (2 f., 3 m., simple or suggested set)
